27days
Canary Islands to Turks and Caicos, 20 November to 17 December 2013
On 20 November 2013 six kiteboarders set off from the Canary Islands with a plan to ride across the Atlantic Ocean. They were Filippo van Hellenberg Hubar, Camilla Ringvold, Max Blom, Eric Pequeno, Dennis Gijsbers and Ike Frans.
They rode in relay. Each rider did two shifts of two hours a day, one by day and one by night, while the others rested on the support boat, a Lagoon 500 catamaran called Double-A with a crew of five. It was billed as the world’s longest downwind adventure.
On 17 December, after 27 days, they reached the Turks and Caicos Islands in the Caribbean. Sources differ on how far they went: one gives more than 7,800 kilometres, another about 5,600.
