Kite racing at the Youth Olympics

At the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, teenagers race twin-tip kiteboards for Olympic medals; Sofia Tomasoni and Deury Corniel win gold.

Before the adults raced for Olympic medals, the teenagers did. At the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires in October 2018 the sailing events were held at Club Náutico San Isidro, and kiteboarding was one of them.

The class was IKA Twin Tip Racing: racing on twin-tip boards. In the boys’ event twelve riders from twelve nations took part. Deury Corniel of the Dominican Republic won gold. Christian Tio and Toni Vodišek shared the silver, and no bronze was awarded. The girls’ event followed the same pattern: gold for Sofia Tomasoni, silver for both Nina Font and Poema Newland.

Tomasoni, then sixteen, is described as the first woman to win an Olympic title in kitesurfing.

Six years later one of the boys was back. Toni Vodišek won silver in men’s Formula Kite at the Paris 2024 Olympics, on a hydrofoil board this time.
