In 1984 the first Aloha Classic was held at Hoʻokipa Beach Park on the north shore of Maui. It takes place in late October and early November, when wind and swell come together, and the contest is often sailed in waves with faces of 15 to 20 feet.

Through the eighties and nineties it was one of the sport’s Grand Slam events, with wave riding, slalom and course racing. In 1984 Alex Aguera won the men’s overall title and Dana Dawes the women’s.

The other disciplines were later dropped and the event became a pure wave contest. It has often been the final of the professional tour, where the wave world champions are decided, and since 2011 it has been the grand final of the International Windsurfing Tour’s wave series.
