The first wing world tour contests

The GWA holds the first events of its world tour at Fortaleza in Brazil and Tarifa in Spain; Titouan Galea wins the very first.

Three months after it was founded, the Global Wingsports Association held the first event of its world tour. From 10 to 14 November 2020 riders from nine countries met on the beachfront of Iracema in Fortaleza, Brazil, for the Wingfoil Super Grand Slam, also called SuperFoil.

The main discipline was surf-freestyle: riding and jumping on the waves with the wing. Titouan Galea won the men’s contest ahead of Balz Müller and Fernando Novaes, and also took the best-trick session. Leysla Perotti won the women’s. In his heat Galea had landed a backflip.

At the end of December the tour moved to Europe. The first GWA Tarifa Wing Pro was held from 27 to 30 December 2020 on Playa de los Lances in Spain, with surf-freestyle for a prize pool of 10,000 euros and surf-racing as an exhibition. Balz Müller won the men’s freestyle and Eva Wyss the women’s; Galea won the race, and Olivia Piana was the first woman.

Galea, Müller and Piana were back in the finals at the first official World Cup, at Leucate in France, in 2021.
