Across the Pacific by wing

Chris Bertish travels from Santa Cruz to Honolulu alone and unsupported, 2,465 miles in 48 days, on a custom-built, wing-powered craft.

On 31 May 2022 Chris Bertish set off from Lighthouse Point in Santa Cruz, California, heading for Honolulu. He went alone and without a support boat.

His craft was not an ordinary wing foil board. The ImpiFish was custom-built, powered by wind, solar energy and hydropower and described as carbon net-zero. Sources give its length as 19 feet or 14 feet. A hand-held wing gave the push.

On 17 July 2022 he arrived at the Aloha Dock of the Hawaii Yacht Club in Honolulu, after 48 days, 15 hours and 15 minutes and 2,465 miles. It was presented as the first solo and unsupported crossing of the Pacific with a wing. His own previous distance record on a wing foil, set in June 2021, had been 212 miles.

On the way Bertish reported on the pollution he encountered in the open ocean.
